Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
