This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
