The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
