The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
