A man who laced treats with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two children both between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from that region, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on recently.

However, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was facing, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was kept in jail prior to a further hearing on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The legal representative, handling the case, described Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a summer camp which he managed.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She told the court the man had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and minors had previously fallen ill the next day.

She said the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "Recently" his stepson had suspicions about the situation, for good reason.

"They chose" to investigate in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel said items including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepson alerted the authorities about his worries.

She said the man continued to play the "sweet game" with six boys that evening - July 26th - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that point," she stated further.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was examining the police response of the events.

The prosecutor stated the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the family member called the law enforcement a second time.

She stated Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a area of five children.
