The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
